A couple weeks ago I participated in a talkback at the Teaneck International Film Festival as a representative of the gun violence prevention organization for which I do a fair amount of volunteering, Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America. I appreciated the invite and the chance to talk with Dennis Hirschfelder of the Brady Bergen County Chapter and Karen Kanter of the Brady New Jersey State Executive Committee.

The conversation took place after a screening of Mass, a haunting film that features two sets of parents meeting in a church basement years after a school shooting in which one son was a victim and the other the shooter. The acting is taut, conveying the weight of grief on both sides of the table, as the parents whose son was shot seek some kind of closure.

The movie is available on Hulu: make sure you’re in the right frame of mind to sit with it.
